Update to the Basic Dictionary Search (October 2015)
We have introduced an important update to the basic dictionary search to improve accuracy, enhance user experience, and align it with the search system on Teanglann.ie.
Previously, when you searched for a word, the dictionary displayed only the matching entry. With the new version, you now receive richer and more detailed search results, helping you find exactly what you need.
How the New Dictionary Search Works
When you search for a word (for example, “sheet”), your results will now include:
1. Similar Words
A list of headwords or dictionary entries related to your search term.
2. Exact Match
If your search term matches a headword exactly, it will appear at the top of the results.
3. Truncated Entries
If the exact match entry is very long, it will be displayed in a shortened format so that other sections remain visible. To read the full definition, simply click on “Show full entry.”
4. Related Entries
Other dictionary entries where the search term also appears as part of the headword will be displayed here.
5. Phrases and Examples in Other Entries
If your search word appears within phrases or example sentences in the dictionary, they will be listed in this section.
Dictionary App and the Updated Search
The first version of our dictionary app was released shortly before this improved search function was introduced.
- The updated search will be fully integrated into the second version of the app, scheduled for release in early 2016.
- If you already use the first version, you will be able to download the updated app free of charge.
✅ With these improvements, the basic search feature now delivers faster, more accurate, and more comprehensive dictionary results, whether you’re using the website or the app.
